Belvedere Glacier - How the Alps Melt
Geomorphologist Vít Vilímek from the Department of Physical Geography and Geoecology and Lukáš Brodský, a remote sensing specialist from the Department of Applied Geoinformatics and Cartography at the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague, were asked to present the international project Glacier Landscape Analysis and Geohazards. Why are our scientists interested in the Belvedere Glacier? Why do Alpine glaciers disappear and why do various sudden events, rock falls or landslides occur in the Alps? Will the Alpine glaciers melt completely and, if so, how will this affect Europe's climate and nature?

Documentary film: The Changing Cryospheric Dynamics of Belvedere Glacier
Charles University, University of Milan, Heidelberg University
"What can a rapidly changing glacier reveal about the future of mountain landscapes?” The Belvedere Glacier is a dramatic alpine landscape and a significant indicator of climate change. It has become a living laboratory where scientists are trying to understand how ice, rock, water, and society interact under rapidly changing climatic conditions.
The film features conversations with professors and researchers working on the Belvedere Glacier, showcasing their fieldwork and scientific reasoning. The scientists discuss their research goals, visions, and the challenges of observing a complex and constantly evolving environment. A range of approaches described, including remote sensing, machine learning, repeat photography, geomorphology, and geohazard analysis, offers a different perspective on glacier change.
The glacier emerges as a dynamic system, closely linked to downstream landscapes and communities. By connecting detailed observations at Belvedere to broader questions of climate change, risk, and adaptation, the film encourages dialogue on why glaciers matter and what their transformation may reveal about the future of mountain regions.
